Why Does My Drain Smell Bad?

If you’ve ever walked into your kitchen or bathroom and been greeted by a less-than-pleasant odor coming from the sink, you’re not alone. At Schrader Plumbing, we get calls about smelly drains all the time, and the good news is — there’s always a reason, and usually a solution.

Below, we’ll walk you through the most common causes of bad drain smells, plus what you can do about them.

1. Food Debris & Grease Build-Up

In kitchen sinks, leftover food particles and grease can cling to the inside of your pipes. Over time, they decompose and produce foul odors.
Tip: Avoid pouring grease down the drain, and use a drain strainer to catch food scraps.

2. Bacteria & Biofilm

Bathroom sinks and shower drains are prone to a slimy layer called biofilm — a mix of soap scum, hair, skin cells, and bacteria. This sticky buildup traps odors and can even clog drains if left too long.
Tip: Regularly flush drains with hot water to help reduce buildup.

3. Dry P-Trap

Your P-trap (the curved section of pipe under the sink) is designed to hold a small amount of water, which blocks sewer gases from coming up. If a sink hasn’t been used for a while, that water can evaporate, letting odors escape.
Tip: Run water down unused drains every couple of weeks to keep the P-trap filled.

4. Sewer Line Issues

Sometimes the problem is more serious — like a cracked sewer pipe or clogged main sewer line — which can allow sewer gases to leak into your home.
Tip: If multiple drains smell or you also notice gurgling sounds and slow drainage, call a professional right away.

5. Garbage Disposal Problems

Food can get stuck under the blades or in hidden crevices of your garbage disposal, creating a lingering odor.
Tip: Clean it by running ice cubes and a slice of lemon through the disposal, followed by a rinse of hot water.

When DIY Isn’t Enough

While small issues can often be fixed with a little cleaning, persistent or strong odors usually mean something deeper is going on. At Schrader Plumbing, our licensed plumbers can quickly identify the cause, clear out buildup, and ensure your plumbing system is in top shape.
